Online play's accessibility has been increased drastically, with ranks becoming introduced throughout the modes, allowing newcomers to not be easily outmached and instead paired against equals. A rainbow colored orb with an off center cross embedded into it, known as the Smash Ball, has a chance to float across the screen. The Final Smash is another returning feature.

Players can break free of grabs by mashing buttons, but if their damage percentage is high, it becomes harder to do so. Players can grab using 'R'.
